Today we continue to explore our Top 3 Remodeling Tips (Part 2/2) to help you be a smarter consumer and ensure your renovation goes smoothly.
Once you determine and write down your goals (1st Tip described in Part 1), you can begin selecting a contractor.
TIP #2. Choose the right contractor.
Choosing the right contractor should be a process. You want to find a true partner…someone who respects your decisions, guides you through the remodel, keeps you from making any wrong turns, communicates with you, and sticks to the schedule and your budget.
How do you accomplish this?
Do your homework.
Do your due diligence by thoroughly reviewing multiple contractors before deciding. Industry standard says to interview and gather estimates from at least three contractors before beginning any home improvement project.
In addition, check references, read online reviews, and social media. Working with your contractor is a relationship based on trust, so you want to have a genuine comfort level. Most importantly, verify each contractor is licensed, bonded and insured.
Listen to your gut.
Avoid setting yourself up for unnecessary headaches. Find a contractor who is easy to contact, willing to answer your questions and keep you updated.
Be sure you feel comfortable with your choice. As your mother would say, listen to your gut.
Verify paperwork.
Review your contract thoroughly and ask for clarification before signing. Also, double-check he or she will take care of the permitting process for you. As a responsible homeowner, you\\\’ll want to verify the work is being done to code, and the correct paperwork is displayed.
Another important factor is to confirm your contractor is developing a site plan for you. This will serve as your blueprint moving forward.
TIP #3. Plan for the unexpected.
There’s no denying it. The unexpected happens during remodeling. From preexisting electrical and structural issues, to weather and availability of materials, setbacks occur.
The best advice? Plan on delays and prepare yourself for a temporary kink or two. In addition, industry experts recommend setting aside 10% to 20% of your total budget for unexpected expenses. Ask for regular updates, and keep the lines of communication open with your contractor.
